Lessons
What happens if I need to change my registration for swim lessons?
You may email the Aquatics Director (Diana Stambaugh) at dstambaugh@bgclubs.org with your request, or you may go to the front desk to request a change in registration. However, changes must be made at least 7 days prior to the date of your first lesson. There is a $10 fee to make such a change and alternate lesson days/times are subject to availability. If you wish to cancel (rather than change) your registration, you must email Diana (dstambaugh@bglubs.org) at least 7 days prior to the date of your first lesson if you wish to get a refund. Again, refunds and credits are not guaranteed, are subject to the $10 fee, and will be forfeited if not requested 7 days prior to the first class.
What happens if my child misses a lesson?
We do not do make up lessons, unless the lessons are cancelled by the Club.
How many lessons will it take before my child is able to swim?
This is a loaded question. Several factors are involved: age, maturity, learning abilities, amount of time exposed to water, familiarity with water, etc.
If you want to shorten the amount of time it takes for your child to “learn to swim,” we strongly recommend that you allow him or her practice or “play” time in the water at least once a week (a swim lesson doesn’t count). Nothing can quite replace the exploration children can do when left to their own devices in the water, practicing the skills they have learned during class in a low-stress environment. Children should be allowed to learn what they can do ON THEIR OWN. This does not mean you should throw your child into 5 feet of water and see what he or she can do. If possible, allow your child to start experimenting during a life-guarded open or family swim and where he or she can touch the bottom of the pool. If the water isn’t shallow enough, get into the water with your child or provide a noodle or kick board.
What is the difference between Parent-Tot lessons and Beginner swim lessons?
The obvious difference is the fact that a parent is expected to get in the water during the Parent-Tot lessons, which are meant to familiarize small children and infants with water and prepare them to work with instructors other then their own parents. In a Beginner lesson, a child should be able to participate in a lesson with three to four other children and an instructor—without a parent.
Will my child learn to swim in Parent-Tot classes?
Generally no. Usually children simply develop skills in the Parent-Tot lessons that will enable them to be more successful in the Beginner Level of swim lessons.
How will I know when my child is ready to take Beginner swim lessons?
Your child is ready for Intermediate swim lessons when he or she is comfortable going under water and can swim a short distance unassisted on both his or her stomach and back.
When will my child be ready for Intermediate lessons?
Your child is ready for Intermediate swim lessons when he or she is comfortable going under water and can swim a short distance unassisted on both his or her stomach and back.
Do I have to get in the water with my child during the lessons?
Only if you enroll in the Parent-Tot swim lessons.
How old does my child have to be to take Beginner lessons (not Parent-Tot lessons)?
Your child is ready if he or she can comprehend simple instructions, is able to go in the water without a parent, and is physically and developmentally mature enough to perform the skills that will be introduced in class (such as make purposeful movements, turn head to the side, etc.). Generally, a child is mature enough by age 2 ½ or 3.
Swim Team
How old does my child have to be in order to participate in the swim team?
There is no minimum age. Our youngest swimmer on record was 3 years old.
How well does my child have to be able to swim to be on the swim team?
Your child needs to be able to swim the length of the pool unassisted. It is also preferable that your child is comfortable going under the water.
Does my child have to participate in swim meets?
Swim meets are optional for those swimmers in the Beginner and Basic levels. However, at the Advanced levels and above, particpiation in swim meets is expected.
How good does my child have to be in order to participate in swim meets?
Our swim meets are developmental, meaning that all abilities may participate.
Do the swim meets cost money?
Some do and some don’t. Our league dual meets are free.
What is USA Swimming?
To quote USA Swimming’s Mission Statement: USA Swimming is the National Governing Body for the sport of swimming. We administer competitive swimming in accordance with the Amateur Sports Act. We provide programs and services for our members, supporters, affiliates and the interested public. We value these members of the swimming community, and the staff and volunteers who serve them. We are committed to excellence and the improvement of our sport.
What does the $60 participation fee pay for? Do I have to pay it if my child does not participate in swim meets?
Every family participating in the swim team program pays the $60 participation fee. The only exception is for participants in High School and/or Spring Warm Up.
By paying the fee, we eliminate having to do fundraising to meet the usual needs of a swim team. The participation fee covers things—such as swim team equipment, end-of-the-year team gifts, a holiday party, etc.—that fundraisers have paid for in the past.
